Heartbleed

You must have come across this word Heartbleed somewhere. It seems to be one of the latest sensational news on the security news. Here is the heartbleed logo for you.

Looks familiar ? Yes i know, if i had a dollar everytime i see this image i would've had atleast a few hundreds of them. Not kidding.

A liitle insight
It is nothing but a bug. But don't just judge the impacts by the sound of it, since it looks decieving. I hope you know about the OpenSSl library. If not have a quick read here. It is a cryptographic library which has the SSL and TLS protocol implementation. In non technical words it is similar to a security software.

Heartbleed is a bug that is exploited in the OpenSSL. It allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software.

Here's a terribly simple and awesome picture by xkcd explaining the Heartbleed

It means all the private keys(user certificate keys, usernames, passwords, etc), user information everything that are protected by the TLS can be exploited. Then anyone can impersonate you in the internet and do whatever they want. To put in the proper way, your information and identity can be stolen which means you are officially screwed.

Solution
Users need to update OpenSSL 1.0.1g. I recommend you doing it immediately unless you are planning on donating all your information and money to the anonymous. Here is the official Heartbleed fix details. Intimate your service providers if they have not installed the patch for the Heartbleed. Make this OpenSSL upgrade as your top priority since it can hearbleed you ! Good time.

Google Glasses with Virtual and Augmented Reality

Even Google joins the community of virtual reality glasses in real time which is so much far greater than just watching special effect movies. As per many reports including the one in techpark, Google is expected to start selling eyeglasses that will project information, entertainment and, this being a Google product, advertisements onto the lenses. These glasses will have the combined features of virtual reality and augmented reality.
Google plans to release smart glasses that will give help users see where they are and where they need to go.
The Google Glasses can use a 4G cell connection to pull in information from Google’s mountain of data and display info about the real world in augmented reality on the lens in front of your eye. As you turn your head you’ll get information about your surroundings and nearby objects from Google Goggles, info on buildings and establishments from Google Maps, even your friends’ nearby check-ins from Latitude. The company has no plans to sell ads into your newly augmented view of the world, but will consider it if the product really catches on.

The glasses are not being designed to be worn constantly — although Google engineers expect some users will wear them a lot — but will be more like smartphones, used when needed, with the lenses serving as a kind of see-through computer monitor.

Google glasses are basically wearable computers, that will use the same Android software that powers Android smartphones and tablets. Like smartphones and tablets, the glasses will be equipped with GPS and motion sensors. They will also contain a camera and audio inputs and outputs.

Several people who have seen the glasses, but who are not allowed to speak publicly about them, said that the location information was a major feature of the glasses. Through the built-in camera on the glasses, Google will be able to stream images to its rack computers and return augmented reality information to the person wearing them. For instance, a person looking at a landmark could see detailed historical information and comments about it left by friends. If facial recognition software becomes accurate enough, the glasses could remind a wearer of when and how he met the vaguely familiar person standing in front of him at a party. They might also be used for virtual reality games that use the real world as the playground.

The expectation is that we will get a really cool demonstration of this technology at Google I/O in June. Be ready for an unrealistic experiance from Google.

Driver-less cars :: Google gets Licence for Self-driving Car In US

Oh man... This seems like the starting of the next era of technology. While referring to an article from techpark i was totally amazed to know this tech crunch. Read it and see what these guys (GOOGLE) are up to.

Google's Driver-less car
Driver-less cars will soon be a reality on the roads of Nevada after the state approved America’s first self-driven vehicle license.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has issued the first license plates that will allow Google’s autonomous cars onto public highways. The first to hit the highway will be a Toyota Prius modified by search firm Google, which is leading the way in driver-less car technology.

Nevada is the first state to devise licensing procedures for autonomous vehicles, and Google is the one of the leaders in that field, having hired some of the top talent that took part in the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges. Google‘s fleet will have red Nevada license plates with a Greek infinity symbol, intended to alert other drivers that a computer has control of the vehicle
This is what the car sees while navigating through the roads.
.The car uses video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic. Engineers at Google have previously tested the car on the streets of California, including crossing San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge.  For those tests, the car remained manned at all times by a trained driver ready to take control if the software failed. According to software engineer Sebastian Thrun, the car has covered 140,000 miles with no accidents, other than a bump at traffic lights from a car behind.

Bruce Breslow, director of Nevada’s Department of Motor Vehicles, says he believes driver-less vehicles are the “cars of the future“. Nevada changed its laws to allow self-driven cars in March. The long-term plan is to license members of the public to drive such cars. Google’s car has been issued with a red license plate to make it recognizable. The plate features an infinity sign next to the number 001. Other states, including California, are planning similar changes.

“The vast majority of vehicle accidents are due to human error,” said California state Senator Alex Padilla, when he introduced the legislation.

“Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous vehicle is capable of analyzing the driving environment more quickly and operating the vehicle more safely.”
Hard to believe right ? We have no other options but to believe what the human brains can do. Lets wait and see the upcoming technology development influencing the driver-less cars.

Smartphone users in India

An article from DNA Bangalore states that the Indian smartphone users are way smarter than their American counterparts. And they are heavier users of social networking sites too.
In spite of having less than 50% of users that the US has (245 million), Indian smartphone consumers use their gadgets more than US citizens.

Fifty-six per cent of Indian smartphone users go online multiple times a day (more than thrice) compared to 53% in the US. In fact, 94% of Indians connect to the Internet at least once a day compared to 88 per cent of Americans.

Indians also use smartphones more for emails than those in the US. About 81% are heavy users of email in India, compared to 73% in the US.
And yes, social network usage using smartphones is higher among Indians with 76% compared to US citizens at 54%. The survey had a few surprises in store revealing that the usage of smart phone in the age group of 18- 29 is the highest.
The findings are from a survey recently conducted by Google in partnership with market research company IPSOS and the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA).

Lalitesh Katragadda, country head-India of Products for Google, remarked, “Culturally, even beyond the well-educated, mainstream Indians are technology curious and device savvy. We believe that the Internet like telephony did, is making the leap from wired internet to mobile, and hundreds of millions of Indians will go online on their mobile devices.”

Some voices from the users . . .- >
Anita Tandur’s life revolves around her smartphone. “My day starts with checking out Facebook and Whatsapp. I check my mails on my Blackberry. And yes, my profession requires me to work on Excel sheets, which I do all the time on my device, said Tandur, retail operations manager with Gokaldas Images.
Digital media professional Sarita Pandey has been using a Blackberry since 2007, and she depends on it for nearly everything that she does in a day. “This is where I read all my mails, respond to 50% of the office mails. I check news, and use it for checking out local restaurants and movie theatres. I check movie ratings online and book tickets too,” she said. Facebook and Twitter, of course, remain on all through the day.
For MBA student Divyalina Bhuyan life is “impossible” without a smartphone. Apart from using messengers and social networking sites, she uses Google Maps and prefers her Blackberry for emails. Bipasha Chaudhuri, a sales professional with Dun and Bradstreet, is too used to mobile Internet.
Chaudhuri prefers to stay “connected” all the time.
However, while some might be tech savvy utilising their smartphone features to the maximum, others still use theirs for basic needs.
Though more of a “big screen” user, Devangshu Dutta, chief executive of consulting firm Third Eyesight, falls back on his smartphone for email, browsing and social media typically when using a laptop is not convenient or feasible. Dutta is also a frequent user of maps and GPS.
